It protects the hose itself from heat radiation coming directly from the manifold and also reduces the risk of the cooling water being heated up further (unnecessarily) by the radiant heat of the manifold. So why is this rather unassuming part so important? The return hose, through which the cooled water exits the radiator and is returned to the engine, is routed closely
